I love design, type, patterns, words, details, old furniture, live music, movies, sewing, camping, baking, cake decorating, and making things.

I feel lucky that I get to do what I do. Design is fun, challenging, frustrating (sometimes), and satisfying (always).

All of the work you see in my portfolio has been designed by me. I do all of my own prepress, prepare camera-ready files, and manage most (but not all) of the production on everything you see — both print and digital. I have also been known to design and build custom packaging when I want things to be just right.

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I studied Fine Arts at University, and I enjoyed that. But I didn’t feel passionate about art in the way people do when they have something to express. I didn’t feel that my art had anything to say. 

Then I studied visual communications and found my passion. I realized that as a commercial artist, I could use my skills to create stunning visuals that communicate for someone else. With that as the foundation of my career, I have always known that it’s very important to listen to my client — to find out what’s important to them and what they need from me. 

Whenever possible, I like to see their environment and get to know who they are as people. I keep all that information in mind as I problem-solve. I want the solutions I create to solve the problem they need solved. The end result is very important to me.

For many years, I have had the privilege of working with entrepreneur and philanthropist Brad Zumwalt. At one of his companies he would remind his employees to “know your business by the numbers” and that resonated with me. Design is a business function and it has a job to do. It’s not about egos or winning awards — it’s about doing great work that is results-driven. 

Nothing makes me happier than producing work that I am proud of, and having a client contact me after it’s all done to tell me it hit the mark. That’s why I keep doing what I do.
